Our fall black bear hunts consist of a consecutive four-week season over bait, followed by a season with hounds. Maine's baited bear hunts begin the Monday preceding Labor Day.
Our black bear and moose hunts are run from the Salmon Pool Camps, which are located 30 miles west of Ashland, Maine. These remote but vehicle-accessible cabins were originally built over 100 years ago and today remain as some of Maine's last original sporting camps. The 4 and 6-person cabins, along with our kitchen and dining room, are located on the bank of the Aroostook River, so bring along your fishing rod and enjoy some of Maine's best brook trout fishing! (Maine Fishing License Required.)
The hunting area is spread over northern Penobscot, Piscataquis, and Aroostook Counties, the top three bear-producing counties in Maine!
A full month of pre-baiting and stand preparation ensures we have plenty of active baits for everyone, with ample spares. We maintain over 150 bait sites spread over half of a million acres and hunt separate locations each week, making each Monday the first day of the season! Our ability to move around allows us to keen higher-than-average success rates and plenty of big bear on the game pole.
Maine Black Bear Hound Hunts start mid September and run through the end of October. Turnpike Ridge Outfitters also offers Maine black bear hound hunts from the Salmon Pool Camps.
Hunting with hounds is exciting and will definitely get your blood pumping. During the chase, you will be listening to the sound of the hounds and seeing Maine at its colorful best! With the changing leaves and cooler mornings, the first strike will get the body and mind started better than a cup of coffee!
Let our experienced guides open the door to the new world of a hunting adventure that builds memories to last a lifetime!
